Description


What is MBSR: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed in 1979, by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, at the Centre for Mindfulness in Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  MBSR is taught to people throughout the world who are experiencing challenges in all areas of life. It explores topics like mindful communication, working with difficult emotions and how perception influences our relationship to stressful events. It is an intensive eight week programme that integrates mindfulness into your daily life.

Online: The programme meets every week (Online) for 8 weeks, for 2½ hours.  There is a "Full-Day" mindfulness practice modified retreat, which is scheduled on a Saturday, 10.00-4.00pm. (Online). Online meetings use the Zoom platform.

Formal and informal practice: During classes you will learn and practice different forms of mindfulness, including formal sitting meditation, body scan, walking mediation, and yoga and some informal mindfulness practices.  

Topics covered: You will learn about stress, and explore habits of thought, emotion and physical reactions. You will have an opportunity to explore effective responses to the challenges of day to day living, ways of relating differently to stress and finding what will improve your sense of wellbeing. There will be some small and large group discussion, (mbsr is not group therapy), offering participants an opportunity to share experiences of practices and exercises.

Home practice: Participants are encouraged to commit to an average of 30-40 mins of practice per day, as home practice helps to deepen the insights and skills to response to difficult mental and physical experiences. You will be provided with an e-handbook and with links to audio recordings of the practices to support your home practice. 

Who this is for: This course is suitable for anyone who wants to respond to life with more meaning, and gain a deeper understanding of mindfulness.

Prior to attending this course the tutor will contact you to arrange an orientation phone call. This is to ensure you are informed about what to expect from participating in this course and to make sure this is a suitable time for you to attend this programme. The course can be challenging, so it is our ethical responsibility to discuss this with you,  and  you will be more informed about whether or not to proceed.


Informed Consent:

Your tutor is completing teacher training and this programme will be recorded for the teacher development. This means the audio from the class is recorded and the tutors video screen is spotlighted during the recording. Participants video screen is not recorded. The recording will be used solely to support ongoing teacher development and competency assessment.


Your Tutor:

The MBSR programme is a specialised mindfulness programme and should only be taught by teachers who have completed a recognised training programme.

Carol has a long meditation and mindfulness practice.  She is currently completing the final stage of the Professional Diploma in teaching MBSR and MBCT programmes with the Mindfulness Centre in Dublin.
